Liberty Mutual is currently seeking a Director of Data Science for their Data Science Tools team, which is part of their Data Science Infrastructure organization. This role is crucial for improving the end-to-end modeling workflow, thus enabling data scientists to execute their jobs more effectively. Job Overview This position involves a full-time commitment, allowing you to work either remotely or on a hybrid schedule from specified locations like Boston, MA; Portsmouth, NH; Seattle, WA; Columbus, OH; and Plano, TX. If you reside outside these areas, you should note that occasional travel may be required for team meetings or events. The role has a strong emphasis on hands-on development. You will be tasked with designing and building internal tools that aid in model development, evaluation, and deployment. This position offers a unique opportunity to not only contribute to the workflow of the data science team but also to shape the direction of the tools utilized across the organization. Key Responsibilities Design and build internal tools and applications to enhance the data science workflow. Own strategy and roadmap for improving data science workflows and tooling across the organization. Evaluate and implement AI capabilities in tooling, making use of frameworks such as MCP, RAG, and PydanticAI. Work with key tools such as Airflow, MLflow, and others to integrate operational and modelling best practices. Collaborate with various groups to promote MLOps best practices. Stay updated on developments in open-source data science frameworks and MLOps. Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and ownership within the team. Required Skills To succeed in this role, candidates should possess a strong technical background with professional experience in building and maintaining Python-based data science and machine learning tooling. The preferred skills include: Proficiency with Git, Bash/shell scripting, and Python development tools such as FastAPI and pytest. Experience using workflow and modeling tools like Databricks, Airflow, and Celery. Familiarity with AI/LLM-based tooling and techniques. An advanced understanding of predictive analytics and statistical diagnostics is also critical. Candidates should have a strong educational background—typically a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field along with at least three years of experience, or a Master’s degree coupled with a minimum of six years of relevant experience. A Bachelor’s degree along with at least eight years of experience is also acceptable.
